The idea of a Drive-In Restaurant with curb service
was a dream of the original owners, Mike & Virginia Meyer.
They had been in the grocery business for years;
owning what was known as The Patterson Food Mart,
located at Patterson & Shroyer Rd. in Dayton.
In the late 50's & early 60's, competition in the grocery
business made it very tough on the local "Mom & Pop"
stores.
On June 21, 1963, they opened up their dream as an
A&W Root Beer Drive-In, selling quality food & beverages
with curb service. Their hard work ethics and belief that
if you sell the best products available, keep a very clean
store, and surround yourself with quality employees, you
can't go wrong. The success of this operation can be
traced back over 40 years to this first day of which
they opened for business. During this early period of
operation, they sold Premium hot dogs, reuben sandwiches,
grilled cheese, frosty mug root beer, and root beer treats.
Since these early years, our menu has grown. In fact, did you
know that The Root Beer Stande was the first Full Curb Service
Drive-In to introduce Foot Long Hot Dogs to Ohio?. With the
great food items we offer today and our own special ingredients,
our Foot Longs have become known throughout the entire region.
We have customers that used to live in the Dayton area,
stop in to buy a bag of Foot Longs and fly them back home
before their visit is over. Mike & Virginia put their hearts and
souls into the success of The Root Beer Stande. I'm sorry to say
that we lost Mom in February of 2005, but she is still in our
thoughts and hearts as well as everyone she touched along the way.
Today, The Root Beer Stande does business the same way
as back then. We still serve the best products available and
make our own Root Beer daily. We have tried to keep the
Stande operating in the same fashion for over 40 years.
Our menu has grown with time, but everything else operates
as it was originally designed. Many curb service Drive-In's
have gone by the way side or they don't offer curb service
anymore. That hasn't happened here. We are Dayton's last
Full Curb Service Drive-In. The families that come in today
are often 3rd generation with a few 4th mixed in. We still
offer Chilled Mugs of Root Beer, Great Root Beer Floats
with many other flavors to choose from, Top of The Line
Sandwiches, and Superior Deep Fried Goodies.

The Root Beer Stande is still family owned and operated.
Since Mike & Virginia Meyer have retired, their son and
daughter-in-law, Alex & Diana, have taken over their duties.
Alex met Diana while home on leave from the service. He
stopped by The Stand to get some free food, and Diana was
the car-hop that waited on him. Now you've heard the term
"Love at First Sight", well that was the case, because they
were married a year later. Both of them have been in this
business for over 35 years. Their son, Alex Jr., is now a
manager at the store.
If you would like to re-visit  yester-year, enjoy some
Great Food & Drinks, or bring along your children for a
little history that is all but gone now-a-days, we would
love to have you here at The Root Beer Stande.
